Vava'u was one of the first places in the world to offer the opportunity to swim with whales, and the years of experience and observation of humpback whale behaviours here have created a wealth of knowledge about these wonderful marine mammals. There are only a few places in the world where it is possible to swim with Humpback whales.
We have partnered with WhaleSwim tours in Vava'u, who have been running these trips for over 25 years, to make sure that we curate the best possible experience for everyone who decides to join us.
The Vava'u archipelago in northern Tonga is perhaps the most famous place in the world for swimming with humpback whales— and for good reason. The islands form a natural nursery for migrating humpback whales between July and late October, allowing them to raise their calves in safety.
Mother and Calf ...
The Tongan Whale Watching Legislation has developed strict rules for engaging with these magnificent creatures, and to promote quality encounters, we are so pleased that Tonga is the place for us to do just that.
All whale-watching boats in Tonga must be licensed, and skippers must be trained and certified to take people swimming with whales. The legislation limits the number of swimmers in the water during an encounter to just 4 people, plus a certified whale-swim guide, and only one boat can have swimmers in the water with those whales. Diving down with the whales is not allowed in Tonga, and our encounters are much better with this regulation in place, as the whales are more likely to relax with us.
Our private boats will have a maximum of 8 guests on board each boat; this means that you will be in the water every second encounter at a minimum. We will generally be in the water multiple times during our whale-watching day, and this rotation allows you to enjoy the often up-close time with the whales from the boat and in the water - breaching and other surface activity is often best seen boat-side!
Map of Vava'u, Tonga
Vava'u, renowned for its breathtaking beauty, is not just a paradise for whale watching but also offers a plethora of other mesmerising experiences. During the whale season, Vava'u and Tonga boast one of the highest populations of humpback whales in the world, offering you a unique opportunity to witness these magnificent creatures up close. Moreover, the islands are teeming with diverse marine life, inviting you to swim amongst colourful coral reefs and explore stunning underwater caves.
Beyond its natural wonders, Tonga captivates visitors with its warm hospitality and rich cultural heritage. The genuine kindness of the Tongan people and their vibrant culture create an unforgettable atmosphere of friendliness and hospitality. From encountering majestic whales to immersing yourself in the vibrant marine life and exploring the island's scenic beauty, your time in Tonga promises to be nothing short of magical.

The global population of humpback whales is increasing, making them one of the ocean's greatest conservation success stories. After being hunted to the brink of extinction during the 20th century, the worldwide population has rebounded from around 10,000 individuals to an estimated 80,000. The whales visiting Tonga belong to the "Oceania breeding stock". This was reduced to just 250 individuals in the 1960s due to commercial whaling, but currently stands in the low thousands.
During September, the humpback whale population around Tonga reaches its absolute peak for the year, making it the prime time for whale activity. This period represents the height of their annual tropical breeding season before they return to Antarctica.
September is highly favoured by researchers and eco-tourists alike because of the specific social dynamics occurring in Tongan waters:
The population is distributed across the Tongan archipelago, but one of the highest concentrations is to be found off Vava'u. This is the most popular island group, known for deep, clear channels that offer high visibility.
My journey with Enchanted Lands and Archangel Metatron has spanned many years. With any long-term relationship, we all adjust to the nuances and rhythm of conversation. So it was a delight but no surprise that he connected with me once again for this adventure.
We used to call them retreats, and sometimes that title is still relevant, but mostly they have evolved into adventures. Metatron said, “Go and swim with the Humpback whales in Tonga, go on the 18th to 25th September 2027”. After I caught my breath at this request… I mean, he did ask us once to go and listen to the new song of the Humpback whales in the Pacific Ocean off Maui… on a kayak… which most of us managed not to fall out of… but we did it. However, swim with them… like in the water at the same time… was that even possible? I share my reaction as you might have similar, so you are not alone! Also, where on earth was Tonga?
As always, I said “yes” and off I went to start my research. I found that there are 3 places in the world that are licensed to allow you to swim with Humpback Whales. So I asked him whether we could just go to the Dominican as that was easier, and less flying, and cheaper… and… NO!
Oooh, next place was one that has called me before, Moorea off Tahiti, L`emurian connections, easy, not at all complicated… can we go there… NO!
Ok then, Tonga it is. Once I settled with the instruction, I connected with the land and her people, to the ocean and the beings within. Wow… Oh, that's why we are going there. I heard drums playing, felt totally held and grounded, and felt awash with authenticity and a welcome of kindness. I felt beauty, simplicity and the easy connection with Mother Earth, less distractions, less noise, more heart, a Kingdom of faith, a place we could be held. They also have the strictest rules of 4 people in the water at the same time, with a guide… (which other places have similar… 6 or so), but only one boat per mother and calf, so as not to disturb them… In other places, there can be boats in double figures.
Once again, I am sharing how this all came to be, as I know we all question things, and it's not always a direct line to our destination.
Then I had a dream, very vivid, and I was standing on a boat, grey, not too big, and I spoke a word to the Captain; he felt as if he was from Tonga… I had a specific direction to ask him to take us on the 4th day with so many miles at so many knots. I also spoke a word in Tongan. I noted it down upon waking.
Nick and I were meeting our son Daniel that morning, and I shared the dream with him, and our next enchanted lands request from Metatron… He told us the word meant hello and blessed in Tonga, and had some roots in Maori.
I haven't told you yet, but as well as going to Tonga, the further request was… we have been invited to go and meet with the King of the Forest in New Zealand, and then meet with the silver dragon in Milford and Doubtful Sound in the South Island (as you do!). Daniel loves New Zealand so filled in the gaps of my knowledge of how that’s an actual tree and sacred to the Māori… and the story unfolds.
Basically, we have had many confirmations that this is our place, our journey, and I welcome you to the soul call that this represents.
The rest of the story is about finding the right partner whose heart and knowledge of the kingdom of the whales beats at the same honourable frequency as ours… we now have all this in place and feel honoured to be answering this call and immersing ourselves and supporting you through this as we share an epic adventure.
All that is required is that we show up for ourselves and each other, for Mother Earth and the Humpback whales that arrive from Antarctica to give birth to their young in those sacred waters.
As always with these Enchanted Lands, I put out a Soul Call, and you will feel this in the heart, be moved in some way that often makes no sense to the mind, your soul to mine, mine to yours, and we join to complete what our souls' journey knows we can. A warm welcome, soul to soul.
Also included will be a 1hr group Zoom call both before and after the retreat, as well as Carol's guidance throughout.
